The orientation included talks by participating scientists about the research that they would be doing while in Panama and also field trips to Capitola Beach and Seacliff State Park where the teachers were able to begin to train their eyes using local fossils.

K-12 educators from Florida and California school districts spent 11 days traveling throughout Panama for a fully immersive international research experience as part of the Great American Biotic Interchange - RET (GABI-RET). In addition to participating in intensive field work with PCP-PIRE scientists, the itinerary included cultural stops, ecotourism, and exposure to the scientific method and discourse through participation in discussions, talks, and sample processing at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.

Crew and scientists aboard the R/V Melville conducted a hydrographic survey of the North Pacific, setting sail from Yokohama, Japan on March 21st and completing 87 stations before arriving in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 5th. The cruise was a challenging, but wonderfully productive expedition, and excellent learning environment for me as my first prolonged sea going experience!
